Moynahan was born in Binghamton, New York, the daughter of an Irish woman, Mary Bridget (née Moriarty), a former school teacher, and an Irishman named Edward Bradley Moynahan, a scientist and former administrator at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, along with her two brothers, Andy and Sean; she is the middle child. Moynahan attended Longmeadow High School and graduated in 1989. In high school, she was active with school athletics, where she captained the girls’ soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams.
